'How The World Works"

The Year 3 class of North Side Primary have completed their investigation of "inventions" from IB unit "How The World Works". They investigated a problem and designed a simple machine to solve the problem. The year 3 students then described their journey when they shared their simple machines with their fellow classmates. The students also researched and celebrated the achievements of inventors. The entire school was informed and entertained by their tributes to special inventors during February, Black History Month.

Marvellous Mangroves

This week, year 3 have been learning about the Mangroves in Cayman as part of their IB unit on Interdependence, a study of habitats. This included a trip on a boat to the Mangroves which edge North Sound to see some of the things that they have learned about in the classroom - and a chance to demonstrate their learning "on site". The children were very excited about the trip, as the photos show, and they learned so much more about jellyfish, sea urchins, sea squirts; mangrove roots...and lots more. It was a great trip and a great learning opportunity! Thanks to Ms Marnie from Sea Elements Marine Education Programmes for inspiring our learning and Mr Danny for taking us out to the Mangroves.

Why do people visit Cayman?

As part of their unit of inquiry for this term - Dis is Cayman - Year 3 spent time learning about the kinds of things that tourists like to do while they're here. They carried out a survey of tourists at Rum Point and then tried snorkelling, kayaking and other water activities that tourists like to try. They also went to Stingray City with Red Sail Sports to try out this 'world' experience - there is nowhere else that people can stepo onto a sandbar and swim with the stingrays!

A Helping Hand for Haiti

Well done! Year 3 pictured with the first load of hurricane relief supplies for Haiti, in the back of Mr Ricardo's truck. The second picture shows the second load - waiting to be loaded! We hope that our efforts make life a little easier for those who have lost their homes and possessions.

A Helping Hand for Haiti

Year 3 have been encouraging all the other classes in the school to lend a helping hand to Haiti. At a recent assembly, all the pupils were introduced to the problems that Haiti has been experiencing since it was hit by a series of hurricanes - Fay, Gustav, Ike and Hannah. Year 3 had made posters to promote the need for help. Different classes were encouraged to bring selected items to school - and all were encouraged to look through their clothes, toys and books to identify items which are still in good condition and could be used again. By Friday 3rd October, we will see how well the school and community have pulled together to help this hurricane relief effort. A Dress Down Day was also organised and over $250 was raised.

Meet the Teacher

At Monday's 'Meet the Teacher' event, I outlined some of the things that your children can expect to be learning in my class this session, and some of the exciting things we will be doing. Our IB themes for this term will be 'Signs and Symblols' and 'Our Island Home' and I hope that you will support your child with homework assignmenst related to these. They will also be doing guided reading, as part of the national literacy strategy, and I hope that you will take time to share the books with your child in preparation for or follow up to in-class activities. We are enjoying using a new Math tool this term called Every Day Counts. This gives a quick daily practice in the basics of math at this level - it includes calendar work, counting activities, sequence and pattern, shape, money, time and much more. All the children have a chance to be active learners within this activity and we are having fun working with it. We are counting up to the 100th Day of School which will be a big celebration! Homework will be given each night (except for HSA meeting nights - so that you can all come to the meetings!) and I would ask that you give your child support and guidance in completing these tasks. We have new homework record books in which we would ask that you sign weekly so that we know you are aware of the homework your child is doing - please also use it for any messages to school or comments on your child's work. I am looking forward to a great year with your children!
